Broadway Sound was born in 1967 under the name Lynn’s Guitars. Founder Lynn Clapp opened his store in one room behind the Fisher’s Pianos store on Cecil Avenue in Knoxville, TN. His sweat equity was great; he ran the small shop during the day, taught a few guitar lessons in the afternoon, and often played jobs at night. He was young, only 26 years old, and his efforts were fruitful.

Lynn was well known in the music community. He had tried his hand in Nashville as a studio musician in the late 50’s / 60’s and lived with Gary Atkins, nephew of his music role model Chet Atkins. He was in the studio when legends like Roy Orbison, Jim Reeves, Hank Snow, Skeeter Davis, and Anita Kerr Singers were recording. He was around when Elvis was in Nashville too. In Knoxville, Lynn was a regular on Lowell Blanchard’s Tennessee Barndance.

After working as “combo” manager for Hewgley’s Music Knoxville branch, he went out on his own with Lynn’s Guitars at the Cecil Avenue location. The business really grew as Lynn’s Guitars met a real need in the Knoxville community. More space was needed so Lynn looked for a bigger place to rent. He heard from a student that part of the old Sharp’s Drugstore on the corner of Broadway and Edgewood was vacant. That was 1969 and the business has been there ever since.

In the 70’s Lynn’s Guitars Broadway location included teaching studios, sales and warehouse space. There were also locations on Kingston Pike and Jackson Square in Oak Ridge. In 1976 the largest fire in Knoxville destroyed the entire second floor of the Broadway location and extensive remodeling took place. The business incorporated in 1977. In 1984 the name was changed to Broadway Sound, Inc. In 2000 Lynn purchased the adjacent building expanding the floor space to 10,000 feet.

Broadway Sound, Inc. is a favored choice among churches and auditoriums of all sizes for custom designed, quality sound systems. We provide sound for most political events in the area, many concerts, and events at the University of Tennessee including the sound at all home football games. We offer free clinics and seminars to all of our customers because customer service is a way of life at Broadway Sound.
